How to Use Reality Audit

Reality Audit can be used on arguments, policies, claims, identities, models, news stories, institutional decisions, and everyday situations.

Six steps

1. Name the situation

Describe what is happening without loading it with theory.

2. Name the claim

What is being said, implied, assumed, or imposed?

3. Separate actuality from frame

What is observed, and what is interpretation, model, role, or story?

4. Identify capture

What may be standing in place of what is?

5. Trace and test

What supports the claim, and what would correct it?

6. Return to practice

What should now be corrected, stopped, said, done, or left standing?

Do not ask first: who wins? Ask first: what holds?
